6061 vs 6063 aluminum profiles is a comparison between two widely used heat-treatable aluminum alloys. Both belong to the 6000 series and contain magnesium and silicon as their main alloying elements, but they are selected for different priorities.

Why 6061 Is Used for Structural Profiles

Both alloys can be cut, drilled, tapped, and CNC-machined. Machining stability, burr control, dimensional tolerance, and final finish should be evaluated on a representative sample.

5. Corrosion Environment

Both 6061 and 6063 offer useful corrosion resistance in many applications. Surface treatment may still be needed for outdoor, coastal, chemical, or high-wear environments.

6. Cost and Availability

Material availability, die complexity, extrusion speed, heat treatment, finishing, machining, quantity, and scrap rate all affect the quotation.

What Does Temper Mean?

Temper identifies the processing condition that gives the aluminum its mechanical properties.

T5 material is cooled after shaping and artificially aged. T6 material receives solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging. The exact mechanical requirements should be stated on the drawing or purchasing specification.

A quotation that says only “6061 aluminum” or “6063 aluminum” is incomplete when strength matters.

Avoid Selecting Alloy by Product Name

An LED Aluminum Channel is often produced from 6063 because extrusion detail and surface appearance are important. An industrial frame may use 6061 when higher strength is needed.

These are common patterns, not universal rules. A large architectural support may require greater strength, while a lightly loaded industrial cover may not need 6061.
